Joint border crossings for faster flow of goods and people

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Construction, Transport and Infrastructure prof. Zorana Mihajlovic PhD., said  that it is important for competitiveness and connectivity to build common border crossings with neighbors in order to facilitate the flow of goods and people.

She said this by introducing MPs to the National Assembly Bill on the Confirmation of the Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Republic of Northern Macedonia on the establishment of joint controls at the border crossing for international road traffic, Presevo – Tabanovce.

–  No matter how much we invest in infrastructure, we build highways and modernize the railways, there is a problem of non-physical barriers, which are not just a matter of crowds in the summer period. They are especially present in cargo transportation where the waiting time could be from 10 to 15 hours at Horgos, Batrovci, and Dimitrovgrad – said Mihajlovic.

She pointed out that this was the main reason why they started talking with neighboring countries to make a unique border check.

– One of them is this agreement, which was born on the initiative of Serbian President, Aleksandar Vucic. We believe that establishing joint control between Serbia and North Macedonia will facilitate the crossing of the border and international road traffic – Mihajlovic said.

She stressed that the Serbian government is committed to expanding capacities, after Batrovci, at the border crossings Horgos, as well as Dimitrovgrad.

– We will have a joint border crossing with Bosnia and Herzegovina on Ljubovija-Bratunac bridge, and our goal is to do so with all other countries, and I believe it is important for our neighbors and for regional integration – Mihajlovic said.
