EU Commission: tachograph data can’t be used to punish drivers for speeding

The EU Commission have concluded that the use of tachograph data to punish drivers for speeding is a violation of EU law. Authorities in Italy now have 2 months to address the issue.

The Commission say that Italy is guilty of breaking regulation number 165/2014, which sets out obligations and requirements in relation to the construction, installation, use, testing and control of tachographs used in road transport.

The violation of EU law relates to the way the Italian authorities have been using the tachograph data to follow up on speeding offences.

The EU Commission states that Italy now has two months to address the concerns. Otherwise, the Commission may decide to send a „reasoned opinion”.
