Changes in the use of Beveren Tunnel – Some ADR transports will be not allowed to use it

Entry to the Beveren Tunnel in the port of Antwerp, Belgium will be restricted from 1 October 2020. Lorries transporting dangerous goods that can cause a (very) large explosion, the release of a significant amount of toxic substances or a major fire will have to use a diversion.

To increase safety in the Beverentunnel, the Belgian Agency for Roads and Traffic (AWV) is restricting the transport of dangerous goods (ADR transport) through the tunnel from October 1, 2020, announced the official website of the tunnel. While all transports are still permitted today, transports from the tunnel will soon be if they are transporting dangerous goods that can cause a (very) large explosion, the release of a significant amount of toxic substances or a major fire (tunnel category D).

In addition to a ban on certain transports, additional measures are also provided in and around the tunnel (traffic lights, barriers, …) to secure the tunnel (surrounding area) more quickly in the event of calamities. Furthermore, a thorough renovation of the tunnel is also being undertaken as soon as possible to allow all ADR transports again.
